The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is a NC DOT facility providing travel and tourism information to both highway and waterway traffic. Our rest area and neighboring Dismal Swamp State Park (NC State Park) provide numerous opportunities for eco-tourism. Enjoy hiking, biking, birding, paddling, photography and much more during your travels through the Dismal Swamp in Camden County, NC. The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, located in VA, is the largest intact remnant of a vast habitat that once covered more than one million acres of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.
Today, the historic Dismal Swamp Canal is part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, NC Black Heritage Trail, NC Birding Trail and NC Civil War Trail.
