The Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is sponsoring a regional Kayaking event in partnership with the Albemarle Loop, The Pelican Marina, the town of Hertford and the Albemarle Plantation, all Albemarle Loop members.
Enjoy this rare opportunity to experience the unique local waters with local kayak experts. Bring your own or rent a kayak here. New at the sport? Just interested? No better way to introduce the family to a great sport. Meet new people. See new equipment. You might even see a black bear or an alligator!
The event will start with a welcome reception at Grouper’s restaurant (400 S Water St #6, Elizabeth City)
on Friday night September 22nd at 5 PM, to give the participants a chance to get to know each other. Motel reservations can be made at any of the following motels.
The next morning, there will be a safety presentation by a USCG certified kayak safety instructor. This will be held at the Pelican Marina in Elizabeth City. Bring your own kayak, or rent one there. This will allow both experienced kayakers to review their equipment and procedures and beginners to get a solid introduction to the sport. This will be held at the Pelican Marina where kayaks will be available for rent. Click here for more information on the Pelican Marina and kayak rental rates.
Once the safety presentations are completed, kayakers will be able to proceed to either the Merchants Millpond tour or Sawyers Creek tour:
After both groups finish the morning paddles, we rendezvous back in Elizabeth City for lunch at either The Flour Girls Restaurant (102 N Water St, Elizabeth City), Sidney’s Restaurant (507 E Main St, Elizabeth City, NC) or Toyama Japanese Restaurant (218 N Poindexter St, Elizabeth City, NC) or Paradiso (next door to Pelican marina) with a 10% discount to all LOOP Kayakers). There are many dining options in Elizabeth City. For a complete list of restaurants click here. You can also stop by the Downtown Waterfront Market at Mariners’ Wharf from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM and browse the downtown shops in Elizabeth City.
After lunch we head to:
After an afternoon of kayaking on Yeopim Creek, we will get together at the Dockside Cafe at Albemarle Plantation (421 Albemarle Blvd, Hertford, NC) for refreshments and an informal gathering that allows all to share their favorite sites and experiences, both locally and internationally.
Once refreshed and our gear loaded back up on our vehicles, those interested in joining in an evening of celebration will meet up in Hertford, a short drive from the plantation, for the Toast the Perquimans, a craft beer and wine tasting event with a variety of food from their food trucks.
